Panic Disorder
What is Panic Disorder?
Panic disorder involves sudden and repeated attacks of anxiety that last a few minutes. The exact cause of panic disorder is unknown. However, we know that panic disorder has biological and environmental underpinnings. Factors such as a neurochemical imbalance, a family history of anxiety disorders, and stressful life events may contribute to the onset of a panic disorder and the occurrence of panic attacks.
Many people who experience panic attacks (a clear sign of a panic disorder if more than a “one off” experience) believe that they are having a life-threatening issue, and some may even visit the doctor or emergency room. Once you’re aware that it is panic, you may become preoccupied with trying to stop it from happening again. This only serves to make the fear stronger. Panic attacks are serious and if you or a loved one have been experiencing them, you know this all too well.
What are the symptoms of panic disorder?
Recurrent panic attacks are the hallmark symptom of panic disorder, but the frequency and number of attacks vary for each person. Panic attacks cause an intense fear, sometimes triggering a “fight or flight reflex”, that appears abruptly and intensifies quickly, with physical and psychological distress that reach a peak within a few minutes. During a panic attack, you’ll have at least four of these symptoms:
- Palpitations (pounding heart, fast heartbeat)
- Sweating
- Trembling or shaking
- Shortness of breath
- Sensation of choking
- Chest pain
- Nausea
- Dizziness or fainting
- Sensation of being detached from reality
- Fear of losing control
- Fear of dying
- Tingling or numbness
- Cold or hot sensations
- The symptoms of a panic attack often mimic a heart attack.
