Our Approach to TMS Therapy
Deep TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)is a patented treatment technology, now available at Stedfast Psychiatry, which can be used to non-invasively stimulate the brain in order to treat patients. Although there have been “traditional” TMS therapies used by psychiatrists for over 30 years, Deep TMS is a cutting edge advancement on this time tested therapy which enables Deep TMS to achieve better treatment outcomes for more patients. Deep TMS truly can be considered a game changer for patients.
Who Can benefit from Deep TMS?
Deep TMS has been FDA-cleared to safely and effectively treat:
- Depression
- OCD
- Smoking Addiction
- Anxious Depression
Our providers are especially looking forward to the potential of Deep TMS to help patients who have otherwise been resistant to other treatments and have a fresh opportunity to life their best life through Deep TMS treatments. A 2015 study showed that 1/3 of patients saw positive results immediately after the initial phase of treatment, and 80% of patients saw positive results by the time they were in the “maintenance” phase of their treatment.
In the real world, Deep TMS has been found to have an even greater effect on patients’ symptoms. A study with over 1000 participants treated for depression found that roughly 75% achieved a positive clinical response following Deep TMS, with one out of two participants achieving remission.
Patients who oppose traditional approaches or refuse pharmaceuticals are also ideal candidates for Deep TMS, as are others who may fear various side effects or complications and wish to rely on non-invasive, clinically-backed mental health treatments.
Is Deep TMS Safe?
Deep TMS has been thoroughly tested and prior to being used with real patients it was tested in over 60 clinical trials worldwide. It has also been in use in clinical settings with real patients for several years, beginning in 2013 when it was cleared by the FDA for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). It has since been cleared for use for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (2018), short-term Smoking Cessation (2020), and has now received an expanded indication for Anxious Depression.
How Deep TMS Works
Deep TMS treatments at Stedfast Psychiatry uses a machine that utilizes patented “H-Coil” technology fitted within a comfortable, padded helmet that can be secured to the patient’s head during the treatment. The helmet is positioned to allow the precise targeting of the area of the brain relevant to the particular symptoms of the patient.
Electromagnetic fields are then used to regulate the activity of the targeted parts of the brain, reaching deep hard-to-treat areas of the brain while simultaneously covering more of the relevant brain than with traditional TMS therapy. This is how Deep TMS avoids the targeting issues that occur when using traditional TMS.
What Does Deep TMS Do?
Through the application of the treatment coil, Deep TMS therapy uses highly concentrated magnetic fields which turn on and off very rapidly. These magnetic fields do not directly affect the whole brain; they only reach about 4 centimeters into the brain directly beneath the specific areas targeted by the treatment coil. These magnetic fields produce very small electrical currents. It is these electrical currents that activate cells within the brain which are thought to release neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.
Because depression is thought to be caused by an imbalance of these specific chemicals in the brain, Deep TMS can restore that correct chemical balance and, thus, relieve depression, OCD, and anxious depression.
How Long Does TMS Take to Work?
While we have noted that a few patients see positive results after 1-3 sessions, for many symptom relief isn’t usually noticeable until at least the third week of treatment.
Sessions are typically short and only last around 20 minutes. Because treatments are so quick, Deep TMS treatment sessions can be easily incorporated into the patient’s daily schedule. As it is non-invasive and minimal side effects, TMS patients are able to drive themselves home from our office after each session.
Deep TMS doe not have to be used in isolation. It can be used as part of a broader treatment protocol that also includes other treatment methods such as medication. Most patients already prescribed medication can also include Deep TMS in their treatment regimen. Many who do have reported a better overall effect on their targeted condition.
